'Being Julia' opens Toronto film fest

TORONTO, Sept. 10 (UPI) -- The Toronto International Film Festival opened with the premiere of "Being Julia," starring Annette Bening, the first of 328 films screening during the event.

Bening and husband/actor Warren Beatty were on hand for Thursday's opening night gala, with Dustin Hoffman, Penelope Cruz, Kevin Spacey, Colin Firth, Sandra Bullock, Orlando Bloom and Sigourney Weaver scheduled to appear at the festival during its 10 days, the National Post reported Friday.

"The festival is a cultural jewel that attracts more than 250,000 moviegoers, film industry representatives, filmmakers, actors and media from around the world," said Jim Bradley, Ontario's minister of tourism and recreation.

During the event, 328 films from 60 countries, including 253 features, will be shown amid glamorous parties and red carpet galas.

The film festival and related events reportedly bring in approximately $67 million annually for Ontario, the National Post said.
