'Fahrenheit's' pirated Cuban TV airing OK

HAVANA, Aug. 4 (UPI) -- The Hollywood film industry said an unauthorized TV broadcast of a pirated copy of "Fahrenheit 9/11" in Cuba won't disqualify the documentary from the Oscars.

Academy Awards officials said they won't hold filmmaker Michael Moore responsible for the prime-time airing last Thursday, the BBC reported.

"If somebody steals your movie and puts it on TV, we're not going to penalize you for it," said John Pavlik, Academy spokesman.

Academy Awards rules say documentary films will be disqualified if shown on TV or the Internet within nine months of release.

Producers have until Sept. 1 to enter "Fahrenheit 9/11" in the Oscar category for best documentary.

The film could also be entered into competition for best picture, best director and best original screenplay.
