Elvis' teenage home to open to public

MEMPHIS, July 28 (UPI) -- The Memphis home where Elvis Presley spent his teen years has been renovated and is ready to be opened to the public for tours, it was announced Wednesday.

The Presley residence, with the newly completed Elvis Suite, will have its grand opening Aug. 9 and will operate tours during Elvis birthday celebrations each January and during Elvis Week each August, said a news release from the Uptown Memphis coalition.

The home, located in Lauderdale Courts, originally was slated for demolition, but Presley's fans and the Memphis Heritage preservation organization saved the landmark, which is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

"We asked fans and the public for their opinions on what we should do with this important American treasure. Considering our residents, the best solution was to open the apartment for public tours on the two weeks that mean so much to loyal Elvis fans," said Henry Turley, managing partner of The Uptown Partnership.
