Broadway talks break down, shows go on

NEW YORK, June 28 (UPI) -- A breakdown in talks between Broadway producers and the actors' union over non-union shows has not disrupted New York's performances.

Strike talks are in limbo after the producers' negotiators walked out of discussions Sunday night with the midnight strike deadline passing, although Equity told its members to keep working, the New York Post reported Monday.

Negotiations allegedly were showing progress, but a source for the producers said Equity "started lecturing us, and we walked."

Equity reportedly wanted producers to sign an agreement to never put on a non-union show, which pays cheaper rates to actors and typically has a lower production budget.

An Equity source told the Post the producers "didn't want to hear what we had to say."

The union leaders are expected to meet soon to decide the next step.
