China dance troupe in U.S. as WWII gesture

PASADENA, Calif., June 8 (UPI) -- A noted Chinese dance troupe will perform in the United States as gesture of appreciation of the alliance between the two nations during World War II.

The Yunan Provincial Dancers will perform June 18 in Pasadena, Calif., at Lincoln Center in New York on June 22 and the Victorian Theatre in Dayton, Ohio, June 26.

Organizers of the tour Tuesday said Yunan is one of China's most ethnically diverse provinces, rich in different styles of dance, costumes and music.

The appearance in Pasadena will also include commemoration of the presentation of a "stoneroller" to the United States.

Stonerollers were massive pieces of construction equipment made from stone and manhandled by teams of more than 100 Chinese laborers to flatten out vital dirt airstrips used by American planes during the war. The story of the backbreaking work will be told by the Yunan dancers through their performance.
