Christina Aguilera cancels tour

NEW YORK, April 30 (UPI) -- Pop singer Christina Aguilera has canceled her North American tour because of strained vocal chords, Billboard.com reported Friday.

Doctors told Aguilera she needed immediate rest for her voice in order to fully recover, said a statement from the singer.

Aguilera was set to kick off a 28-city tour May 13 in Seattle with rapper Chingy in the opening slot.

"I am extremely disappointed to have to cancel this tour," the singer said. "I was looking forward to being on the road again and spending time with my fans."

The tour was in support of her latest album, "Stripped," which has sold 3.6 million copies since its October 2002 release.
