Bobby Brown released from jail

ATLANTA, March 23 (UPI) -- Troubled R&B singer Bobby Brown was released early from a Georgia jail, but only so he could appear in family court in Virginia on another matter.

Brown was jailed Feb. 27 after he violated his probation on a drunk driving charge by allegedly slapping his wife Whitney Houston, as well as refusing to take drug tests, pay probation fees and provide proof he completed counseling and his period of house arrest, E! Online said Tuesday.

Brown had been scheduled to remain behind bars through Thursday, but Dekalb County Sheriff Thomas Brown said he received an order requesting the singer attend his Wednesday court appearance in Virginia, so he released Brown Monday.

No details regarding the family court date were revealed.

Houston, who has admitted to drug and alcohol use throughout her distinguished career, entered a rehabilitation center last week. She and Brown have an 11-year-old daughter.

A preliminary hearing on the battery charge has been scheduled for May 5.
