'Rings' takes Best Picture Oscar

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 29 (UPI) -- "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" won the Oscar for Best Picture Sunday at the 76th Academy Awards in Los Angeles Sunday.

Writer-director Peter Jackson's adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's literary epic won 11 Oscars in all, taking the statuette in every category for which it was nominated.

That tied the record for Oscars in one year, established by "Ben-Hur" in 1959 and matched by "Titanic" in 1997.

"The Return of the King" won for directing, adapted screenplay, score, original song and six technical-creative categories.
