'Barbarian Invasions' wins big in Montreal

MONTREAL, Feb. 23 (UPI) -- Denys Arcand's film, "The Barbarian Invasions," earned the top film prize at the Jutra Awards in Montreal Sunday night.

The Quebec-born filmmaker left the Place des Arts with four awards, including best film, best screenplay and best director, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported Monday.

"The Barbarian Invasions" is also nominated for best original screenplay and best foreign language film Oscars, which will be announced in Hollywood Feb. 29.

Although Arcand's film earned the top prizes at the Jutras, it did not take the most awards; that honor went to "La Grande Seduction," which won seven Jutras.

The Jutra for best actor went to Serge Theriault for "Gaz Bar Blues," while Marie-Josée Croze was named best actress for her portrayal of a junkie in "The Barbarian Invasions."
