Venice goes one-way for carnival

LONDON, Feb. 6 (UPI) -- Venice, Italy, is clamping down on pedestrians for this year's "Carnivale," ordering them to follow a one way path through the city.

The BBC reports revelers in the streets of the Italian city of canals and waterways will be forced to follow a strict one-way system over bridges and narrow streets. On-the-spot fines of 25 euros ($32.25) that could rise to 500 euros ($625) will be imposed on those ignoring the new rules.

More than half a million visitors are expected at the carnival which runs from Feb. 7 until Shrove Tuesday, Feb. 24.

The main attraction of the carnival is the final day, when thousands dress up in costumes and masks.

In general, tourists are fairly obedient, Venice Police Chief Francesco Vergine said. "When they are asked to go in one direction, they do as they are told by police, even if grudgingly."

This year's festival theme is "The Orient Express, Voyage on the Old Silk Road, India, Thailand, China and Japan."
