With new lipstick, L.A. hot spot opens

HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 7 (UPI) -- Hollywood's newest, and for the time being, hottest entertainment club has opened near the famed corners of Hollywood and Vine, USA Today reported Tuesday.

After first opening its doors in 1927, the cavernous former theater has been through many reincarnations -- the Hollywood Playhouse, the WPA Federal Theater, El Capital Theater, the Jerry Lewis Theater and the Hollywood Palace.

Now, it's the Avalon, run by owners John Lyons and Steve Adelman, who hope to breathe new life into the place as a concert venue and nightclub.

Stars from the Rolling Stones to Dean Martin, Judy Garland to Snoop Dogg have worked its stage.

The ceiling's historic molding has been power-washed of its caked-on black crud, and a new bar with retractable ceiling off the upstairs area is filled with Moroccan furniture and tile. Draped, hidden VIP lounges were ready for A-listers.

A Vanity Fair party with Macy Gray and a Lisa Marie Presley mini-concert are scheduled for the near future.
