Russian gas reaches Greece

ATHENS, Greece, Jan. 23 (UPI) -- Greece received Russian gas shipments through Bulgaria following weeks of disruptions from a conflict over Ukrainian gas arrears, a Greek energy company said.

"The flow of Russian natural gas to Greece via Bulgaria has been restored," DEPA, the Greek state-run Public Gas Supply Corp., said in a statement. Gas from Russia began flowing to Bulgaria Tuesday.

Russian gas monopoly Gazprom and Ukrainian energy company Naftogaz Monday signed a 10-year contract on gas supplies, ending weeks of disputes that left European customers without Russian gas.

Europe gets about 25 percent of its natural gas from Russia. Nearly 80 percent of that volume transits through Ukraine.

DEPA said it relied on domestic reserves and liquefied natural gas to shore up shortfalls from the Russian-Ukrainian row, RIA Novosti reported.

Greece consumes about 230 million cubic feet of Russian natural gas per day. On Monday, daily shipments of 88 million cubic feet from Greece traveled to Bulgaria to help the Balkan country meet its energy demands.
