German army receiving more Future Soldier System equipment

The German military has ordered more Future Soldier System equipment from Rheinmetall.

June 28 (UPI) -- The German army has contracted Rheinmetall to equip the branch's 68 infantry platoons with modular Future Soldier systems.

The equipment, which will bring the soldiers into the network-enabled warfare loop, includes the core and helmet system.

The core computer worn by the soldier controls all the devices and sensors carried by the soldier. Its principal functions include power supply management, access control and monitoring, operation of the soldier information system for map and situation display, navigation, reporting, exchange of reconnaissance and target data and processing sensor data.

"This important order underscores once again Rheinmetall's role as the world's foremost supplier of high-tech soldier systems," Rheinmetall said in a new release Wednesday.

The order has a net value of $348.5 million, Rheinmetall said, and will equip more than 2,460 soldiers. Since 2012, the German military has procured 90 lots of the system.

The systems will be delivered between 2018 and late 2020.
