April 11 (UPI) -- Saab has been contracted to deliver its BOZ-101 electronic warfare self-protection and countermeasures system to the German air force.

The airborne warning system was ordered on behalf of the German forces by the NATO Eurofighter 2000 and Tornado Management Agency, or NETMA. It is designed to provide pilots with early warning and missile detection capabilities while in flight.

"The well renowned BOZ pod has been used on the Tornado for many years. This large follow-up order for the enhanced version confirms Saab´s capability to meet our customers' need for state-of-the-art self-protection systems to improve their operational capabilities in hostile environments," Saab surveillance business chief Anders Carp said in a press release.

The device is a wing-mounted pod comprised of a missile approach warning system and a countermeasure dispensing system.

Saab's work will be performed at its facilities in Järfälla, Sweden and Centurion, South Africa. German authorities expect deliveries to take place between 2017 and 2020.
