Jan. 24 (UPI) -- Alliant Tech Systems has received a $45 million contract modification to develop new 120-millimeter Advanced Multi-Purpose cartridges.

The modification is a follow-up to a $15 million agreement tasking the company with developing High Explosive Multi-Purpose with Tracer cartridges in July 2015. Alliant will now begin the second development phase of the contract, which also includes engineering and manufacturing services.

The U.S. Department of Defense provided Alliant with over $900,000 at the time of the modification award, and expects the work to be complete by July 2019.

The Army Contracting Command in Picatinny Arsenal, N.J., is listed as the contracting activity.

The U.S. Army is in the process of developing new 120-millimeter Advanced Multi-Purpose rounds for its tanks with the goal of combining six different capabilities into a single round. Officials plan to use the new round to replace four existing variants.

Picatinny Arsenal awarded a pair of development contracts in July 2015, and says the new rounds will be capable of defeating dismounted infrantry, serve as a ground and air fuze, engage anti-tank missiles, and breach reinforced walls.
