MELBOURNE, Fla., May 1 (UPI) -- Targeting capabilities of U.S. Navy F/A-18E/F Super Hornets are to be enhanced with avionics components from the Harris Corporation.
Harris reported it is to supply the Distributed Targeting System to the Navy under a under a $19 million full-rate production contract, and that the system boosts the aircraft’s networking capabilities, targeting precision and also shortens the time period from target sensing to shooting.
“Start of full-rate production is a key milestone in the F/A-18 E/F Network Centric Warfare Upgrades program,” said Ed Zoiss, vice president and general manager, Defense Programs, Harris Government Communications Systems. “Upgrading the mission- and image-processing prowess of the Super Hornet will help ensure that it continues to be the primary fighter aircraft for the U.S. Navy.”
The number of systems to be made under the full-rate production contract and a delivery schedule, for the items were not disclosed.
Harris Corporation is a key supplier of avionics for the Super Hornet and its electronic warfare variant, the EA-18G.
