AUGUSTA, Ga., April 12 (UPI) -- Phil Mickelson used a bogey-free round Sunday in pulling away and winning his third Masters championship.

Mickelson had four birdies in his last seven holes, including a 3 at the par-4 18th hole at Augusta National, for a 72-hole total of 16-under-par 272. That was three strokes better than runner-up Lee Westwood, who led Mickelson by one going into the final round, and four better than Anthony Kim, whose 31 on the closing nine allowed him to finish third.

K.J. Choi and Tiger Woods, who played all four rounds of the tournament together, tied for fourth at 11-under 277.

Mickelson has had an emotional year, alternating between golf and helping his wife Amy and mother get through cancer treatments. Amy Mickelson was able to greet her husband at the 18th green after he holed the final birdie. It was the first tournament she's attended since being diagnosed with breast cancer last summer and the lengthy embrace they shared underscored the importance of her being able to be at the event.

"I normally don't shed tears over wins," Mickelson said. "When Amy and I hugged off 18, that was a very emotional moment for us. I'll cherish every moment of this week."
