PARIS, Nov. 19 (UPI) -- Thales Group unveiled a new security and surveillance camera lens the company says can match military capabilities.

The 10x20 high-definition zoom lens is capable of detecting an individual at a distance of 6 kilometers, with possible recognition at 2 kilometers and identification capabilities at a distance of 1 kilometer. The zoom lens is built to capture sharp images day or night at visible wavelengths and in the near infrared band.

The zoom lens features a variable focal length from 20 to 200 mm, designed to replace zoom lenses currently equipped on helicopters, gimbal-mounted cameras, and unmanned aerial vehicles. It is also compatible for ruggedized cameras used by deployed ground units.

The product was displayed Wednesday and Thursday at the Milipol exhibition in Paris just a week after terrorist attacks in the city killed at least 129 people. The company suggested internal security services can use the camera "to control borders, protect sensitive sites such as airports and nuclear power plants, and provide security during major sporting or political events."
