LYNCHBURG, Va., Sept. 29 (UPI) -- BWX Technologies Inc. is to manufacture components for nuclear reactors aboard U.S. Navy submarines and aircraft carriers under $34.5 million in new contracts.

The majority of the work by BWXT Nuclear Operations Group -- it has already begun at company facilities in Virginia, Indiana and Ohio -- will be conducted over the next two years.

BWX Technologies said about $9.4 million of the $34.5 million in awards represents the exercise of options under a previously announced contract.

"We are very pleased to receive these contract awards and add to our backlog of work," said Peyton S. Baker, president and chief executive officer of BWXT. "We continue to stay focused on operating safely and delivering the quality products that our customer demands."

BWXT has been manufacturing naval nuclear components and reactors since the 1950s. Its reactors power the Navy's Ohio-, Virginia-, Seawolf- and Los Angeles-class submarines, as well as the Nimitz- and Ford-class aircraft carriers.

Additional details of the contracts were not provided.
