U.S. Navy exercises option for submarine support

GROTON, Conn., Sept. 21 (UPI) -- General Dynamics Electric Boat is to continue providing support services for active U.S. Navy submarines and submersible vessels.

The work comes from the Navy's exercise of a contract option and is worth $321.7 million. If additional options are exercised the contract's five-year overall value would be $1.5 billion, the company said.

"Under this option, Electric Boat will provide design, engineering, material and logistics support, and research and development activities for active U.S. submarines and submersibles," it said. "Electric Boat also will provide information services, planning, scheduling and technical support for submarine maintenance and modernization activities, training and facility support, and affordability/cost-reduction support."

Additional details of the contract were not disclosed.
