MCLEAN, Va., May 21 (UPI) -- Exelis is expanding its presence in the Asia-Pacific region with establishment of a headquarters in Australia and a research and development facility.

The company said the headquarter and R&D facility, which will also conduct testing and systems integration, will be in the city of Melbourne in Victoria State.

"The decision to establish our Asia-Pacific headquarters in Melbourne was heavily influenced by the region's robust engineering talent, growing market opportunities and the unwavering support from the Victorian Government," said Exelis Chief Exective Officer and President David Melcher. "Paired with our more than 40 years of history serving the Australian market, this expansion represents our company's continued commitment to growing our presence in the Asia-Pacific region and our focus on international expansion."

Exelis established a presence in Melbourne last year when it acquired C4i Pty. Ltd.

Exelis said its new regional presence in Australia will ensure greater in-market resources to defense and security needs and also enhanced development of intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance systems, analytics and electronic warfare products.
