Rheinmetall Defense’s improved ship passive missile defense system protection system has been tested by the German Navy. The German company said its Multi Ammunition Softkill System naval countermeasure system, with integrated sensors, or MASS_ISS, was integrated with the NavGuard radar detection system by the ELTA Group of Israel, for active warning of incoming rockets and missiles.
In five tests, conducted in Howachter Bay in the Baltic, the decoy system installed on a mine-hunting vessel successfully defeated Milan anti-tank missiles fired at it from shore by a German Army Unit. “No few fewer than five times, NavGuard flawlessly detected the incoming projectiles in extremely short order, which were then successfully engaged by MASS,” Rheinmetall announced. “These excellent results are a further milestone in the use of modern technology to combat asymmetric threats.
“Rheinmetall intends to have the MASS_ISS with integrated NavGuard ready for full-scale production by 2015.” Rheinmetall said.
