Peru orders C-27J airlifters

TURIN, Italy, Dec. 19 (UPI) -- Alenia Aermacchi is supplying two C-27J Spartan tactical airlifters to Peru under a contract worth about $136.6 million,

The contract signed earlier this week includes logistical support, technical assistance, training for pilots, crew and ground engineers, and special equipment requested by the Ministry of Defense, the company said.

"The choice by the Peruvian MOD is a confirmation that, when an air force has a stringent airlift requirement in terms of performance and capability, the Spartan is the only solution able to guarantee an excellent value for money," said Giuseppe Giordo, Alenia Aermacchi's chief executive officer.

Peru chose the C-7J following an operational evaluation of the aircraft in the country.

The C-7J, introduced into service in Italy in 2006, is a twin-engine medium-lift aircraft with a cruise speed of 362 miles per hour, and a range of 640 miles while carrying a 13,000 pound payload.

With the contract, Peru becomes the 11th country that operates or has ordered the C-27.
