Thales Communications expands, changes name

CLARKSBURG, Md., Oct. 16 (UPI) -- Thales' U.S. communications business has expanded and changed its name from Thales Communications to Thales Defense & Security.

The expansion of its communications portfolio for the military and first-responder markets is the result of its merger of two Thales business segments – the navigation, surveillance and simulation sector of Thales' air traffic management organization and Thales USA Defense and Security.

Also contributing to the expansion was Thales Communications' acquisition in 2012 of Tampa Microwave, Visionix, and InterSense.

Tampa Microwave provides man-packable, tactical SATCOM terminals for high-bandwidth, voice, video, and data battlefield communications. Visionix and InterSense are developers of helmet-mounted display and motion-tracking technologies.

The name change from Thales Communications to Thales Defense & Security is effective now, the company said.

Thales Defense & Security is a subsidiary of the Thales Group, a European defense and electronics giant headquartered in Paris.

Additional details of the expanded portfolio of Thales Defense & Security were not provided.
