HONOLULU, Sept. 11 (UPI) -- A vintage General Dynamics F-111C jet has been donated to the Pacific Aviation Museum Pearl Harbor by the Royal Australian Air Force.
The decommissioned aircraft -- the only one the RAAF has donated to an organization outside Australia -- arrived at the U.S. military's Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam in three shipments and then reassembled.
"We honor aviation history in the Pacific as part of our museum mission, so to receive this from the Royal Australian Air Force is particularly significant," said Pacific Aviation Museum Pearl Harbor Executive Director Kenneth DeHoff. "We'll give it a final resting place that recognizes RAAF and Australia as the allies and aviation leaders they are in the Pacific region."
F-111s, with variable sweep wings, saw combat in Vietnam and participated in the bombing raids of Operation Desert Storm. Australia was the only country other than the United States to operate the platform.
