CANBERRA, Australia, Aug. 30 (UPI) -- An Australian-designed phased array radar and combat management system for ships has successfully completed operational acceptance trials.
The testing of the radar and combat system -- part of a program to modernize anti-ship missile defense (ASMD) on Anzac-class frigates -- was conducted by the Royal Australian Navy and the Defense Materiel Organization.
The final operational acceptance tests included successful Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile engagements of multiple sea-skimming targets and engagement by an ESSM of an advanced supersonic target.
"The ASMD upgrade provides the ANZAC class with a significantly enhanced level of self- and local-area defense against modern anti-ship missiles," said Vice Adm. Ray Griggs, chief of the Royal Australian Navy. "The complexity of the firing scenarios is unsurpassed in the RAN's history, particularly the successful firings against supersonic targets. The results from this activity are a ringing endorsement of the capability flowing from the ASMD program."
The radar was built by CEA Technologies Australia. Saab Systems also participates in the ASMD program.
