OSLO, Norway, June 25 (UPI) -- State-owned AIM Norway has signed an agreement with Lockheed Martin for work on the F-35 Lightning II.
Work involves surface coatings and final preparation of components for tail wing of the aircraft and is worth $47.8 million, the Norwegian Ministry of Defense said.
The contract calls for 36 sets of parts for Italian production and assembly of F-35s. The award, however, could be extended.
"This proves yet again that Norwegian small- and medium-sized businesses are able to compete internationally in very important technology niches," Norwegian Secretary of State Erik Owre Thorshaug said in announcing the deal. "It requires great precision and a commitment to quality, and that's exactly what Norwegian industry repeatedly has shown that it can deliver.
"Although this contract in itself may appear small, it is still very important for AIM Norway's position relative to Lockheed Martin. They now have the opportunity to demonstrate what they are good for and that they are a credible partner for future work."
Norway has committed to buying as many as 52 F-35 fighters. The first four, which will be used for training, are to be delivered in 2015 and 2016.
