ST. JOHN'S, Newfoundland, May 22 (UPI) -- Kraken Sonar Systems Inc. says U.S. Navy testing of its AquaPix Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Sonar proved its capabilities.
The InSAS was deployed from a REMUS 600 Autonomous Underwater Vehicle owned and operated by the Navy's Naval Undersea Warfare Center.
A total of 26 evaluation missions were conducted under a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement and the system demonstrated its capability of generating high-resolution imagery to ranges as far away from the sensor as 200 yards. Kraken Sonar Systems said.
It also showed its capability of generating bathymetry that correlated well with corresponding SAS imagery and compared favorably with bottom maps obtained from an independent bathymetric survey.
"The CRADA with NUWC was an important test and evaluation of our AquaPix sonar," said Karl Kenny, president and chief executive officer of Kraken. "We are very pleased to have demonstrated the mature performance of our system.
"These results will give customers an added degree of confidence in deploying Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Sonar solutions."
Kraken said its InSAS product provides much higher resolution imagery at greater ranges than conventional side-scan sonars by using sophisticated signal processing software.
