Alenia delivers upgraded Tornado ECR

ROME, May 10 (UPI) -- The first of 15 upgraded Tornado ECR fighter has been delivered to the Italian air force by Alenia Aermacchi and its partners.

The upgraded aircraft -- the Tornado ECR MLU -- features an integrated IN-GPS navigation system supported by a multi-mode receiver system for approaches and ILS blind landings; and a new communication and identification system for enhanced, secure communications and data transmission/reception capacity as well as TACAN navigation functions.

Cockpit improvements include a new multifunction display suite, new TVTAB LCD color displays that replace former monochromatic display and an internal and external lighting systems compatible with night vision goggles.

"The new aircraft's software allow the integration of new sensors and avionic systems and enables also the integration of a new version of anti-radiation missiles and also the possibility of dropping GPS precision-guided weapons," the company said.

Working with Alenia Aermacchi on the upgrade project are Cassidian and BAE Systems.
