ROME, April 19 (UPI) -- Alenia Aermacchi of Italy and aircraft manufacturing consortium Eurofighter GmbH have signed $221.8 million deal for components, systems and services.
The contract covers Alenia's responsibility for 1 Eurofighter Typhoons ordered by Oman late last year.
Alenia is part of the Eurofighter consortium, which includes Britain's BAE Systems, and EADS, which has headquarters in the Netherlands.
"Oman's order represents the European Consortium's third export success story, making the Sultanate of Oman the seventh customer of the aircraft," said Finmeccanica, Alenia's parent company. "This order brings the overall number of Eurofighter ordered to date to 719, 517 of which have been contracted, by Italy, United Kingdom, Germany, Spain, Saudi Arabia, Austria and Oman."
The Typhoon is a twin-engine, multi-role fighter with a maximum speed of 1,320 miles per hour at altitude.
In addition to components for the fighters ordered by Oman in December, Alenia is providing an initial 5-year logistics package that was requested by the Omani air force.
