MELBOURNE, Fla., Nov. 13 (UPI) -- The Harris Corp. is modernizing the public safety communications system of Macon, Ga., under a $7.68 million contract, the company said.
The modernization project will effectively connect the city's police and fire departments to the sheriff's office of Bibb County for reliable, interoperable communications.
"Modernization of our legacy communications system called for a cutting-edge, yet standards-based, system to deliver necessary voice and data capability and true interoperability to our first responders," said Dale Walker, the city's chief administrative officer.
"The Harris solution proved to be the most fault tolerant option to give Macon's public safety agencies the reliability, connectivity and functionality they need."
Harris said it would provide the city with a three-site 800 MHz Project 25 simulcast system capable of integration with new technologies such as Long-Term Evolution networks.
Nearly 700 Harris Unity XG-100 full-spectrum mobile and portable multiband radios -- operating on VHF, UHF, 700 MHz and 800 MHz frequency bands -- are part of the solution, as well as an OpenSky overlay and WiFi hot spots.
