GROTON, Conn., Sept. 18 (UPI) -- General Dynamics Electric Boat has received a $94 million contract from the U.S. Navy for repair work on a submarine that was damaged by fire last May.
The ship is the USS Miami. It suffered an estimated $400 million in damage while in drydock at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Maine, when a civilian worker allegedly set it alight so he could leave work early.
Under the contract, General Dynamics Electric Boat will conduct advance planning and preliminary execution of fire-restoration efforts.
Those efforts will include assessment and analysis, planning and material procurement, fabrication and initial installation by next June. It will be performed in coordination with engineering overhaul work the USS Miami was to undergo at Portsmouth when the fire occurred.
The company said the contract includes an option which, if exercised, would make the cumulative value of the award to $100 million.
About 300 Electric Boat employees will be involved in the project.
