SOUTH BEND, Ind., Aug. 23 (UPI) -- The U.S. military has given AM General a $64.5 million contract to produce prototypes of its offering for the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle program.

The JLTV is a program by the U.S. Army and the U.S. Marine Corps to develop a replacement for the Humvee.

"We are pleased to receive this contract award for the next step in the JLTV program," said Charles M. Hall, president and chief executive officer of AM General. "It's a tribute to the design, engineering and program management team that developed, built and tested BRV-O, and to the AM General workforce that has established such a great track record of supporting our military customers with innovative, affordable and dependable light tactical vehicle products and services for more than five decades."

AM General's Blast Resistant Vehicle-Off road product features a crew capsule and modular armor, which has undergone government blast testing, a fuel-efficient and high- performance engine, and a self-leveling suspension system.

Under the engineering, manufacturing and development phase contract AM General will produce 22 prototype vehicles for government testing.
