Mystery customer for port protection

FARNBOROUGH, England, July 9 (UPI) -- An unidentified customer has ordered several port security systems worth $55 million from a subsidiary of Israel Aerospace Industries, ELTA Systems Ltd.

The systems ordered are the ELI-3320 Port-Guard protection system, which employs a variety of sensors to detect, locate, track and classify surface and subsurface targets.

Those objects include swimmers and divers approaching a port.

IAI said the system features a command-and-control center that provides full-view coverage of an area. When system sensors identify a potential threat, security units are alerted.

"ELTA's tailored, integrated naval port protection system provides all-weather, comprehensive perimeter protection against a variety of maritime and ground threats which could endanger ports and threaten their safety," said Nissim Hadas, IAI corporate vice president and president of ELTA Systems said:. This new contract positions IAI-ELTA Systems as a leading worldwide supplier of Maritime Port protection systems."

No additional details were provided.
