Contract modification for Electric Boat

GROTON, Conn., June 1 (UPI) -- General Dynamics Electric Boat reports that the U.S. Navy has given it a contract modification worth $117.8 million to develop advanced submarine technologies.

The modification is to a 2010 contract, which was for a period five years and worth as much as $710.6 million if all options were exercised.

Connecticut's General Dynamics Electric Boat said that, under the modification, it will conduct advanced submarine research and development studies in a wide range of technology areas for current and future submarines. Those areas include manufacturing, maintenance, hydrodynamics, acoustics and materials.

Research and development work will also be performed in the areas of manning, hull integrity, performance, ship control, logistics, weapons handling and safety, among others.

The company said that in the near term, its research and development studies will support technology insertion on Virginia class submarines. Research and development will also identify technology replacement options for Ohio class submarines.
