ARLINGTON, Va., May 1 (UPI) -- The U.S. Army Contracting Command has tapped ATK to produce small-caliber ammunition under an indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity award worth $266 million.

The ammunition -- a mix of 5.56mm, 7.62mm and .50-caliber rounds -- will be manufactured at the Lake City Army Ammunition plant in Missouri, which is run by ATK.

"Since 2000, we have delivered more than 11 billion rounds of ammunition in support of our nation's warfighters while modernizing the facility, increasing capacity, improving productivity and efficiency and doing so in a safe and responsible manner," said ATK Small Caliber Systems Vice President and General Manager Kent Holiday.

ATK reported that with the Army it has been modernizing the Lake City facility. As a result, the plant has increased its production rate of new 5.56mm Enhanced Performance Rounds.

Since transitioning to production of the new rounds in 2010, about 250 million of the bullets have been produced.
