Navy contracts sub, carrier maintenance

GROTON, Conn., April 4 (UPI) -- Contracts for maintenance and modernization work on seven U.S. Navy submarines and an aircraft carrier have been awarded to General Dynamics Electric Boat.

The first contract is worth $15.4 million and is for the planning, engineering and design, prefabrication and shipyard tasks required to complete a dry-docking continuous maintenance availability for the Los Angeles class attack submarine USS Annapolis.

General Dynamics Electric Boat said the work would be conducted at its facility in Groton, Conn., and will be completed by December.

Work on the second contract, worth $9.8 million, will be performed at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Wash. It involves maintenance on the submarines USS Kentucky, USS Pennsylvania, USS Seawolf, USS Connecticut, USS Ohio and USS Michigan.

Work on the aircraft carrier USS Reagan is included under the second award.

Work at the Puget Sound facility will be completed by October, the company said.
