MESA, Ark., March 13 (UPI) -- An advanced helicopter flight control system providing improved maneuverability has been tested by Boeing and the U.S. Army.
Testing of the Adaptive Vehicle Management System, which has been under development for two years, was conducted using a Boeing H-6 helicopter in seven flights late last year, Boeing said.
The tests demonstrated how the system adapts the flight controls to the aircraft's flight condition and environment.
AVMS is a step forward from a traditional flight control system in that it is able to process large amounts of information and communicate with the pilot through forces applied to the control sticks," said James Dryfoos, Boeing AVMS program manager. "These tactile cues allow the pilot and aircraft to work together better and maximize mission effectiveness."
Boeing said elements of the system could be used on CH-47 Chinooks and AH-64 Apaches.
Boeing, which developed the AVMS in collaboration with the U.S. Army Aviation Applied Technology Directorate is competing for the second developmental phase of the project.
