World Micro briefs on electronic fakes

GEORGE TOWN, Malaysia, March 9 (UPI) -- A U.S. electronics components company has briefed Malaysian officials on component counterfeiting and offered educational programs to thwart the practice.

World Micro Inc. said the briefing to the Malaysian Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism by members of its Asian distribution hub was the first by an independent U.S. business to ministry officials on the problem.

"Because of what I've seen here … we will bring this to the attention of our head office to address the issue of counterfeit and substandard components crossing our borders with stronger measures," said Guna Selan Marian, deputy state director of Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism and head of Penang's enforcement division.

World Micro Inc. said 35 Malaysian counterfeit enforcement officers and a number of government officials representing the country's Northern Corridor Implementation Authority attended the session and that Malaysia is highly interested in halting counterfeit trafficking in the country.

The Georgia company signed a collaboration agreement with NCIA last year to establish its opening of an Asian distribution hub in Penang.

The agreement includes provisions for World Micro to train local businesses in combating counterfeit electronic parts.
