MCLEAN, Va., Nov. 29 (UPI) -- The U.S. Army has contracted Alion Science and Technology to produce digital terrain and geospatial data to its Geospatial Center.
The contract is worth $6 million and was given as a task order under the Defense Technical Information Center's Weapon Systems Technology Information Analysis Center contract. The period of performance is through Sept. 1, 2014.
WSTIAC, operated by Alion, is one of the 10 Defense Technical Information Center Information Analysis Centers with libraries of information focused on specific technology areas.
In addition to providing technical expertise, DTIC provides access to scientific and technical information for U.S. Department of Defense personnel and contractors.
Under the task order, Alion will produce digital terrain and geospatial data sets, which could include roads and geological information, Alion said its work includes validation of the Army's geospatial enterprise-enabled systems through experimentation, systems engineering and systems implementation plans.
"Validating AGC's technical solutions can greatly improve the quality of maps and other geographic information used by warfighters in the field. It can also help commanders plan and operate decisively," said retired Navy Rear Adm. Richard E. Brooks, Alion senior vice president and manager of the Distributed Simulation Group.
"Additionally, Alion's work will be instrumental in helping the Army to build its geospatial intelligence policy and strategy."
