Morpho detectors get EU approval

PARIS, June 24 (UPI) -- The European Civil Aviation Conference said an explosives detection system from California's Morpho Detection Inc. meets EU Standard 3 requirements.

The evaluation gives European authorities and airports flexibility in meeting their security challenges with a choice of a powerful, but smaller-size, EU-compliant computed tomography-based screening solution.

EU regulations state all new EDS equipment purchases should meet Standard 3 requirements by 2012.

The CTX 5800 is the industry's smallest medium speed EDS, with nearly twice the throughput of competing small systems. It offers space-constrained airports and other operators the ability to give their customers the superior threat detection effectiveness and operational efficiency benefits of advanced technology CT-based hold baggage screening.

"The CTX 5800 explosives detection solution customizes CT-based imaging technology for smaller and space-constrained airports, giving them a technology edge to help meet their growing aviation security and operational challenges," said Dennis Cooke, president and chief executive officer of Morpho Detection. "Successful completion of ECAC evaluation of this small but powerful EDS, along with recent evaluations of the larger CTX 9400 DSi and CTX 9800 DSi, allows airports of all sizes and volumes to adopt with confidence the detection effectiveness, operational efficiency and customer-pleasing speed of CT-based hold baggage screening."

The CTX 5800 features versatile modes of operation to meet airport needs in virtually any baggage-handling-system or free-standing EDS installation situation, the company said.

The CTX 5800 was tested by the Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research, which is participating in the ECAC Common Evaluation Process for Security Equipment, a new unified European process where security equipment is tested to a defined standard across four European test centers designated by their respective authorities.

Morpho Detection is part of France's Safran Group. It made the announcement at the Paris Air Show.
