LONDON, March 21 (UPI) -- Britain's Ministry of Defense unveiled a textile-based, lightweight net that's designed to stop rocket-propelled grenades from penetrating vehicle armor.
Called QuickShield, the net is applied as a bandage for bar armor enabling armored vehicle crews to rapidly replace damaged bar/slat armor on military vehicles in the field.
The QuickShield net is stowed in the vehicle and can be fitted immediately without tools.
It is to be delivered to British troops Afghanistan next month as part of a $4.2 million contract.
The ministry said the textile-based TARIAN armor was developed by the Defense Science and Technology Laboratory and Amsafe in Bridport, England. In 2009, the ministry acquired the first sets of TARIAN to protect heavy equipment transporters bound for Afghanistan.
The system was displayed as part of the ministry's National Science and Engineering Week events.
The Defense Science and Technology Laboratory is an agency of the Ministry of Defense and exists to supply impartial, scientific and technical research and advice to the ministry and other government departments.
Amsafe produces safety and securement products for the aerospace, defense and ground transportation industries.
