U.S. firm orders Selex lasers

EDINBURGH, Scotland, Jan. 27 (UPI) -- An unidentified U.S. company has ordered $45 million worth of high-energy lasers from Scotland's Selex Galileo.

The 196 lasers are to be fitted into the unidentified customer's targeting systems.

Selex Galileo said the lasers, acting as rangefinders and designators, will allow fighter aircraft crews to target the enemy with precision while remaining outside the range of hostile fire.

"Selex Galileo is a market leader in high-energy lasers," said Alastair Morrison, senior vice president for Selex's Radar and Advanced Targeting business. "The company has a proven track record in manufacturing and delivering cutting-edge laser systems to the demanding specifications of major international customers.

"These contracts recognize not only our high level of technological expertise but also the trust our customers place in us to deliver the most affordable and cost-effective solution."

Additional details of the order weren't disclosed.

Selex Galileo operates a laser center in Edinburgh and has sold more than 4,500 lasers for programs in more than 25 countries with integration complete on some 40 platforms across air, land and sea.
