Agency orders Backscatter equipment

BILLERICA, Mass., July 9 (UPI) -- An international agency has contracted American Science and Engineering Inc. to provide ZBV Military Trailers for vehicle cargo screening.

The contract is worth $3 million, the company said Thursday, but identification of the organization placing the order was not disclosed.

"With this first order from an international government agency, security officials will have the capability to respond effectively and quickly to inspect vehicles for explosive threats and contraband," said Anthony R. Fabiano, President and CEO of AS&E. "The ZBV Mil Trailer has a proven performance record in harsh environments and has been extremely successful in war zones for force protection and counterterrorism operations."

The ZBV Mil Trailer is a more rugged version of AS&E's Z Backscatter van system. On one side of the vehicle -- a standard military trailer -- is an X-ray screening system that "produces photo-like images of the contents of a container or vehicle, highlighting organic materials such as explosives and other high-risk materials."

Screening can be performed while the vehicle is stationary or in motion.
