Army gets 150th Firefinder radar system

ROLLING MEADOWS, Ill., April 28 (UPI) -- Defense company Northrop Grumman announced the delivery of the 150th Firefinder radar shelter to the U.S. Army.

The next-generation Firefinder radar is a weapon-locating radar that detects and tracks hostile fire on the first round. It gives warfighters the ability to pinpoint counter battery fire.

The Firefinder system is designed for rapid deployment to the battlefield via air or ground transport, Northrop Grumman said.

"The delivery of our 150th Firefinder shelter represents a key milestone in the Army's effort to improve the operational performance, reliability and long-term supportability of the AN/TPQ-36 Firefinder system," said Pat Newby, vice president of Weapons and Sensors for Northrop Grumman's Land & Self Protection Division.

Northrop Grumman said it was working on electronic upgrades to the radar shelters under a $285 million contract with the U.S. Army.

Military officials praised the next-generation Firefinder radar system for its light weight and operating space for combat forces.
