Students during the three-day event in May take part in the engineering design and production of robotic explorers used by NASA for space exploration.

Joyce Winterton, association administrator for education at NASA, said the program gives U.S. students the opportunity to take part in real-world scientific development.

"It successfully demonstrates and furthers the participants' academic knowledge in science, technology, engineering and mathematics," she said.

Each team designs a prototype rover starting with budgetary developments to engineering drawings and presentations.

The program is offered through a pilot educational program in Texas.
