BETHPAGE, N.Y., Jan. 12 (UPI) -- The U.S. Navy has received delivery of a Northrop Grumman-built mine-detection technology as part of a phase II contract with the company.

U.S. company Northrop Grumman announced the successful delivery of its Airborne Laser Mine Detection System to the Navy. The ALMDS technology is designed to provide the Navy with next-generation mine threat detection capability near the surface of the water.

Officials say the delivery announced Monday marks a milestone for Northrop Grumman and is more than six weeks ahead of schedule as part of a Low-Rate Initial Production phase II contract.

"Mines are an inexpensive threat, deployable by terrorists and rogue states, to international shipping and access assurance by our military vessels. … Northrop Grumman's ALMDS, particularly when coupled with our mine clearance system, will not only address the threat but keep the sailor out of the minefield," Bob Klein, Northrop Grumman Maritime and Tactical Systems vice president, said in a statement.
