LONDON, Dec. 22 (UPI) -- The British Defense Ministry announced plans to change the armed forces' camouflage design to provide troops with improved gear for the Afghan terrain.
British Defense Secretary Bob Ainsworth announced the armed forces will receive new uniforms based on next-generation computer modeling of various terrains in Afghanistan, particularly in Helmand province located in the volatile south of the country, the British Defense Ministry reported.
The new Multi-Terrain Pattern camouflage, tested and evaluated in pilot trials as part of a more than $400,000 study, takes into account Afghanistan's desert, wooded and grassland areas among other colors from the environment to help troops blend in.
"This new camouflage will help our troops blend into different environments in Helmand province to stay hidden from the Taliban," Ainsworth said in a statement.
"Patrols take our troops through the Green Zone, scrubland, desert and arid stony environments and it is crucial that the camouflage can work across all of them."
