UAE contracts for airborne surveillance

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, Nov. 18 (UPI) -- U.A.E. defense authorities have contracted Saab to deliver its airborne surveillance system with next-generation radar technologies.

Sweden-based Saab announced it has been selected by the United Arab Emirates to deliver two of its widely deployed 340 Airborne Early Warning systems that are designed to provide defense authorities with detailed pictures for border security and other applications.

Under the more than $219 million deal, Saab will provide the 340 AEWs with its Erieye radar technology along with associated ground equipment among other support services.

"We've been conducting discussions with the UAE for several years concerning an airborne surveillance system," Ake Svensson, Saab chief executive officer, said in a statement.

"This contract is an additional proof of our expertise and international competitiveness within the field of network-based solutions for defense and civil security."
