Raytheon awarded follow-on for COSMOS

TEWKSBURY, Mass., Aug. 31 (UPI) -- The U.S. Navy has awarded Raytheon a phase II follow-on contract to continue its support for the Compound Semiconductor Materials on Silicon program.

U.S. company Raytheon was awarded the contract from the Office of Naval Research with funding from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. Under the $7 million follow-on deal, Raytheon will continue development of compound semiconductors as part of the COSMOS program.

According to a news release, Raytheon will be expected to follow its phase I semiconductor demonstration with a new focus on "improving the yield and integration density of compound semiconductor and silicon complementary metal oxide semiconductor transistors fabricated on the same silicon wafer."

"The COSMOS program focuses on integrating high-performance compound semiconductors, such as indium phosphide or gallium arsenide, with low-cost silicon transistors to achieve superior cost benefits and performance than what is available today," Michael Del Checcolo, Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems vice president of engineering, said in a statement.

"These technological advances allow us to provide more complex and highly sophisticated solutions for our warfighters."
